Congratulations to Richard & Linda Peters on the birth of their granddaughter Addilyn Peters (Parents: Jamie & Deondra) on Dec. 24, 2015.

Our sympathies and prayers go to Millie & Ed Hildebrand on the death of Millie’s mother, Rosie Sawatsky, on Jan. 14th. Rosie was also the aunt to Larry & Lavina Thiessen and Marg Rempel. The funeral will be Tues. Jan. 19th, 2:00 p.m. at Oak Lake Mennonite Church.

Camp Moose Lake Update:  The Camp Moose Lake Interim Board met with MC Manitoba representatives on Jan. 13th to negotiate the purchase of the camp.  Discussions went very well.  Further information will be provided at the SMC Annual Membership Meeting on Feb. 29th.

The Bursary Committee invites all those attending a Post-Secondary Christian College/University this semester to fill in a bursary form. Forms are available at the church office and need to be returned by Sun. Jan. 31.



All are invited to join a new season of Supper Club.  Supper Club puts together singles, married couples and families into groups of 8-10 people. Each group meets for supper once a month from Feb. to May in each other’s homes to get to know one another better.  If interested, please sign up at the Welcome Centre by Sun. Jan. 31.

The First Mennonite Church choir of Winnipeg is preparing to perform Carl Loewe's Das Suehnopfer des neuen Bundes on Good Friday evening.  Mennonites from across Manitoba have sung this work with the First Mennonite church in the past, most notably at the Centennial Concert Hall in 1996.  Yuri Klaz and the FMC Choir invite all interested singers to rehearse with us on Thursdays at 7:30pm at the church 922 Notre Dame Avenue.  Tell your friends! Hello - Here are the MCC Manitoba bulletin announcements for January 17.

Summerbridge 2016 - MCC is accepting applications from churches and participants for Summerbridge 2016. This is an 8-12 week service program for young adults attending a Mennonite or Brethren in Christ church, focused especially on young people from inner city or ethnic minority congregations. Participants receive a stipend from MCC and their local church to work in the church or a community organization so they can develop leadership skills and help get to know their home congregation and community better. Help needed - MCC's IVEP midyear conference needs your help! 57 incredible young adults from all over the world are coming together in Winnipeg this February. We're looking for people who can serve as billets from February 4-8(5 nights). We're also looking for groups to provide lunch or supper on February 5, 6 and 8. Sam’s Place event: “The Problem of ISIS: Alternative Responses to Terrorist Violence” on January 28 at 7:30pm, hosted by Steve Plenert. The guest speaker will be Dr. William Rory Dickson, Department of Religion and Culture, from the University of Winnipeg.

Dr. Dickson completed a Joint-PhD in Religious Studies (2012) at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo, with a specialization in Islamic Studies. As a SSHRC Doctoral Fellow (2010-2011) Dr. Dickson attended the University of Toronto and the University of Copenhagen’s Graduate Research School in Damascus, Syria. His research focuses on contemporary Islam in general, and on Islamic mysticism (Sufism) in particular. His forthcoming book Living Sufism in North America: Between Tradition and Transformation (State University of New York Press, 2015) explores the ways in which Sufi leaders in North America negotiate Sufism’s changing relation to Islamic orthodoxy, authority, and gender. He is currently preparing a manuscript with Meena Sharify-Funk (under contract with Equinox) for an innovative introductory text on Sufism, while continuing a number of research projects on Sufism.
